Chicago Transport

Chicago is divided east to the west by State Street . And north to the south by Madison Street . Each block has one hundred addresses each and is a 1/8th of a mile in length.

Chicago Public Transport
CTA rail tracks are elevated above ground level which is why it is nicknamed 'El' although some areas the Red and Blue lines go underground. The circle of elevated downtown train tracks is the " Loop ". The CTA services use transit cards which are topped up, sold and charged at vending machines at El stations. Collect the folding system map with both the El routs and bus routes.

Chicago by Bicycle
Chicago has many on road bike lanes. Bicycle riding is never allowed on sidewalks except for children under age 12. CTA buses have bike racks for two bicycles.

Buses run on every major street with high frequency.

Chicago by Car
Driving in Chicago is not difficult but finding parking is, your best option is walking or public transport. Most of the major car hire companies service Chicago

Chicago by Foot
Walking is a very pleasurable experience in Chicago. The best areas to walk around are River North, The Loop and downtown Chicago. The not so good pedestrian areas are the south and west sides of Chicago.

Chicago by Train
The elevated train line, known as the EL runs through the loop and connects with all major stops and suburbs in Chicago. Trains commence at 5am and continue through until 1am, with the Red and Blue lines operating 24 hours a day. Visitors can purchase an unlimited pass that allows trips all day on buses and trains. These passes can be purchased at the stations or the Visitors Information Office.

Chicago by Trolleys
Downtown there are free "trolleys" with specially marked bus stops.They usually run every 20 minutes and travel between Navy Pier and State Street, along Grand Avenue.

Chicago by Water
There are water taxis and sight seeing boats on Lake Michigan and on the Chicago River. They are a great way to see some of Chicago's attractions and they are reasonably priced, you can purchase an all day pass to gain the best value.
